Tinkering
School

I think most people would agree that experience is one of the greatest
tools for learning, and tinkering school allows just that. By letting
children solve problems by tinkering with solutions, just like a
scientist solves problems with experiments.
Gever Tulley is the founder of tinkering school. A 6 day dedicated camp
where kids enjoy a fun and simple way to learn from hands on experience.
"You haven't lived until you hand a 9 year old a screwdriver and tell
them to take something apart...they're ecstatic!"
Its this kind of creative learning where the children themselves
discover
where their limits and their potentials lie.
One thing you will notice is that children haven't been conditioned
into what can or can not be done and they are not afraid to fail or try
new approaches to an idea. The ability to try and fail
is hugely critical in building character and mental resilience.
Yet adults are conditioned into thinking failure is a bad thing and to
be avoided at all costs. Even leading to a paralysis of action in some
cases because adults are to afraid to fail at something that they
simple won't want
to try.
This is something that needs to be taught in all public schools and it
makes me some what sad that kids have to go somewhere else to learn
these skills.
"We're working with groups in Baltimore
and Seattle to take the Tinkering School template and replicate it in
those cities, but everything about Tinkering School is open-source - we
share all of the ideas and activities on our blog and I personally
encourage dozens of people a year to open their garages and share their
love of tinkering with the kids in the neighborhood. Beyond that we are
working to develop kits and mobile experiences that can bring Tinkering
School into classrooms and communities world-wide."
